I hear your pain, Mr. G. Had a relative in a very similar situation. Unfortunately, she learned that medicare does not cover everything and she was responsible for the rest. Her bill, too, went to collections but she was able to negotiate directly with the hospital even though the collections company was hounding her. I got a letter from them stating "based on our recent phone conversation" I HAVE NEVER picked up the phone and spoke to them. Have to file frauduent actions against them now. They say i made arrangements on the phone. BULL.
You can sue Nichter's law firm for harassment under The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act if you are within the 1 year statute of limitation. Substantial monetary settlements have been awarded to plaintiffs in such cases. The debt collector must generally pay attorney fees as well as damages to you. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm an attorney and was similarly harassed by Nichter's firm for a bill that was paid per the invoice to an incorrect but almost identical subsidiary of the hospital parent corporation.
