I just got a call on from this number, too, they left a recorded voicemail about carpet cleaning. I also have a 201 area code cell phone. I looked up this phone number all over the internet and it led me to an IP phone company based out of England. I called them, acting all innocent and like I really wanted to find out who their NJ Carpet cleaning customer was so I could use their services. They put me on hold for a few minutes and said they couldn't give me any information on the phone number (which of course, is not what I asked!).
I also called Verizon to have this number blocked, but they told me they cannot block a number if it is not a 10-digit number. This is clearly designed this way on purpose to get around anti-spam rules. They are using IP phones to make these calls and putting 9-digit phone numbers in for their caller ID, knowing that companies cannot block them. My phone is on the Do Not Call registry and I never get marketing calls, so I am really curious to know if they got my number off some list or if they're just dialing every number in the 201 area code. My bet is on the latter.
If they call again I will pick up and try to schedule an appointment. If I get anywhere with this I will update here!
Listed on the "Do not call" registry - received a phone call from this number on my cell phone. When I picked up, it was a recording of "Diane" offering to clean my carpets. I pressed "1" to make an appointment. I was directed to a man with a very thick Middle Eastern accent who spent time repeating that the company was "Carpet Care" (and not Carpet Cure, which is what I understood it to be at first - due to his accent). He then asked if I wanted to make an appointment and I instead asked him why he was calling this number since my number is on the do not call registry. - he then hung up -
PLEASE report it to donotcall.gov, you don't need all the numbers. It's up to them to figure out how they are making the calls. It's a computer who just tries random combinations of numbers. Obviously with cell phones being digital, rather than analog, there is some loop hole that allows shorter numbers to go through (similar to how you can send text messages to 5 or 6 digit numbers). The only way to stop it is if everyone here reported it and the company got hit with steep fines (it'd easily be over 30k just with those on this site).
just called me, I have a 201 area code, cell phone. I was able to submit a complaint online with the Do Not Call registry, even though the number was 6 digits, I encourage all to do the same please!
