Got a call from someone whose Indian accent was so thick, I could not tell what he was saying, but then I did hear something about "your computers". I immediately knew it was a scam, because I am well aware of the scam where people are told that Microsoft is calling them about a problem.
And I only use Macs. I told the guy that I knew he was wanting to scam me about computers I don't even own.
Then I called him an appropriate name and hung up.
This number, 201-605-7987 called on November 12, 2015 at 1:10pm EST. No ID. Since we have an unlisted phone number, I don't answer callers I don't know. No message left. Unfortunately, I am at my limit of 31 Blocked Calls on my phone service.
If this call is what others are saying on this list, this is what has been known as the Microsoft phone scam. Been around since 2009, I believe. Do NOT answer the phone. If you answer the phone, DON'T do anything the person says to do on your computer. You will be giving them remote access to your computer and/or be installing their malware, if you do. Microsoft or any other computer company will never call you to say you have a problem with your computer (security or otherwise).
Fairy Graham (above), if you typed in something they told you to type, I would immediately have your computer checked for malware. NOW. I don't know if you got far enough into their instructions to 1) either have malware installed or 2) given them access to your computer. Either way, you need to have your computer checked out...do so yourself or take it somewhere.
I watched a security expert take one of these calls using clean computers (where no damage could be done) and he went along so the public could witness what was happening eventually informing the caller (right before entering in his credit card number) that he was a consultant for the FBI (he really is!) and that everything that had been happening & their conversation has been recorded. It's more than an hour long. Unfortunately I can't find it again (it was a couple of years ago) but here is 1 of many posts on the scam itself and what not to do.
Smart to simply add this number to your blocked list, if you can. Call your phone company to find out if you have that feature available to you. If you answer the phone & they state they're from Microsoft (or any other computer company) & they've detected a security problem, simply hang on up them. Don't get into a conversation with them and DON'T go to any site they tell you they're from or press any keys they tell you to press, just hang up.
This person or company needs to cut the crap out!!! They call numerous times and don't leave message and or hang-up. These people need to be found and fine'd out of the [***], then they'll stop!!!!!! Get a real job!!!!!
I keep getting these calls and have tried numerous ways to get them to stop.
You should know that they will give your info out to just anyone - I gave zero information and told him he called the wrong number. he then said he did NOT call the wrong number and gave me the full name and address of SOMEONE ELSE. Coincidentally it was my mother, which ULTRA pissed me off. I flipped out and told him that was illegal, that I needed contact information for my lawyer, etc. I do some variety of this each time he calls. I tell him it's illegal to keep calling numbers when the person has asked to be removed from the list.
I have also told him that I do not own a Windows computer, but have a mac (truth). He said my Mac was sending their helpdesk malware information.
