Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Add to your reject lists of calls.   2022397044 thet saying that I will be in big trouble if I don't pay them 2000.00 and to get a lawyer as soon as possible because the US Department of state is going to sue.  The guy hung up promptly when I told him the call was being recorded and that I plan on sending the recording to the attorney generals office and that I plan on filing a police report.

I received two phone calls from this number on March 20, 2014. The voice mails said, "Kindly call us back before something wrong happens to you."

I called back to find out what this was. A gentleman with a heavy Indian accent answered the phone, would not identify himself or give the name for a company. He said that I had a loan application and needed to "go to the courthouse". I informed him I did not apply for a loan, nor do I have any loans in my name. He said, "Are you sure?" Upon telling him I was sure, I asked for the specifics about this loan and he said, "You have that information and I have legal proof." I asked him to give me details and he said, "You must go to the courthouse if you're not going to pay this now." I asked him what he was talking about and he repeated that I needed to go to the courthouse. I asked which courthouse and he replied, "The one where we are."

At this point, I told him this sounded like a scam, and he abruptly hung up.

I called back and the same man answered the phone. I told him not to call my number any more. He said, "Oh, I'm so scared." I informed him I believed this to be a scam since he would not give me either his name or the name of who he represented. Again, he said, "You must go to the courthouse." I informed him I would inform the Attorney General's Office of this scam, and he replied, "You talk to your Attorney General, and bring him to the courthouse with you. Our Attorney Generals are already having a case against you."

It's obvious this is a scam. No details are given, demands are made for money, false information is given, and the man (who clearly wants to be believed to be of some kind of legal authority) isn't even aware of what an Attorney General is.

As soon as I posted, this idiot had the nerve to call me back. I asked his name, and he stated, in his heavy Indian accent, "Attorney Roy Miller." I informed him I'd already filed a complaint with my state's Attorney General's office, and he quickly hung up.
