I too received a message, at work. I couldn't really understand the automated message but have caller ID on my phone so I called back. Spoke with a Jose Martinez (mind you he had an Indian accent with a Hispanic name???) Clue one. Read off a bunch of accusations that I had falsely reported my correct income and that they were seizing my home, property, cars, license, bank account and I was facing 5 years in jail. Staying calm, after Mr. Martinez completed his jabber I started asking him questions….Where is the documentation? How much do I owe?... This did not settle well with Mr Martinez. He originally said it was for the past 5 years and then stated if was between 06-12. Also stating someone has been to my home on 2 different dates to deliver the documents and no one was there (mind you my husband is home during the day), also I owed $7,950.00 and if I did not take care of this and it did go to court it would cost me over $30k. I asked again to have the documents sent to me so I could see what this was about. He stated the IRS has tried twice to deliver and they would not make another attempt. When I asked specifically what years and dollar amounts, he stated because it had gone this far they would not discuss MY file any further. Keep in mind this whole time, he did not ask to confirm DOB, SS#, or current address nor did he mention my husbands name on our taxes as we file jointly. He then transferred me to Senior Investigator Dexter Cruz. I asked Mr Cruz the same questions. His response was that I knowingly and willing defrauded the IRS and had to pay. I explained to him that I wasn’t saying he was right or wrong but that I had no idea who he was and that in this day and age there are so many scams going on, how could I be sure this wasn’t one of them??? His reply……..”I will tell you what is going to happen. A warrant for your arrest has been issued and someone will be waiting at your home when you get there” (click). I then called local law enforcement and reported the call. I found out several departments at my work received similar calls within the last few days. This morning, being irritated about yesterdays events, I called the number back and Mr. Martinez answered the phone. I proceeded to go off on him and tell him what a piece of [***] they were for trying to scam innocent people and misrepresenting the IRS and that a report had been filed with local and government agencies. His comment???......”Oh! Really??” (click). After Mr. Martinez hanging up on me I called back several more times, only for it to ring once and then go dead………I hope they catch these scum bags!!!!

I received this call at 11:05am. It was a pieced together recorded message: "This...message...is...for...you..."  Yes, it said "You," not my name or anyone else's name, but "You."  I listened to the entire message and it went on to say something about the IRS and to have my attorney contact them or some such.  it requested I call them back at number I couldn't quite understand. Obviously this was not the IRS as my household has never failed to pay our taxes to the fullest. Is there some place we can report these numbers for investigation or is there nothing we can do regarding these scammers but to suffer their calls, place a block on their number (so they can try again from a different number), etc?

Received a call from these scammers from 202-506-8051. Unintelligible Indian on the phone threatening legal action and telling me the IRS had done an audit on my taxes from 2006-2012 and we owed $5,000. Fortunately I googled this number and found out it was a scam. Why doesn't the phone co shut this number down??

The scammer is probably calling from India, using a fake (spoofed) phone number on your Caller ID.

We can no longer believe the phone number we see on our caller IDs (CID) belongs to the person who called!  The bad guys are now using easily accessed technology to "spoof" the CID numbers, so their real number does not appear.

The problem has gotten so bad, the US government actually passed an Act, called "The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009", making such spoofing illegal.  See http://www.fcc.gov/guides/caller-id-and-spoofing
for more information.

The FCC adopted that Act in June, 2010, stating that violators could be fined up to $10,000 for each violation.

However, the bad guys are ignoring this law ... after all, they are criminals, and that is what criminals do.  Although we now have a "law" against spoofing, it is very difficult to enforce it.

So, if you see a CID number on your phone when you are called by some scammer or telemarketer, it might not belong to the scammer!  It might be the number of some unsuspecting third party ... or, it might be one of those numbers that charge $25 (plus about $9 per minute) if you call it back.
