I'm a receptionist at the company I work for. I've been getting these 'kind' of calls for awhile now. Just a few minutes ago, got a call from 202-625-0400, asking for someone who doesn't work here. We're an international company, and often, the person they're asking about IS an employee of the company, but not this location.
I'm familiar with the "M.O." now, so I told the caller the person doesn't work here. The caller has an Indian accent (they all have Indian accents) and he proceeded to argue with me regarding whether the person they were looking for worked there or not. I hung up on him. He called right back, same number. I hung up on him. Then he called back with a different #; 718-392-5985. Totally different area code, but the same person.
I'm learning to NOT give these callers the time of day.
(PS) The number, 718-392-5985 is an actual # for a literary agent in New York. Not sure if the literary agent is still in business or not, but the # is registered to him.
Call my boss' number first and then called again so I picked it up for him and they hung up. Tried to call back, and it said "the number you have dialed is not in service."
I just got the call right now and the guy with the accent brutalized the pronunciation of my name. He asked if "Ginger" works there and I said, "who is this?" They studdered and asked again and then hung up. I heard about this scam on the news. The number was 202-625-0400.
Same exact thing happened to me. Caller called my direct line and then asked if it was Melissa, when I said yes, it hung up. Called back, recording says number is not in service.
