Called several times from "Martz Broadcasting" (shadowing the name) using local cell phone numbers (336) 544-9226 on 6/25/15 and (336) 544-9224 on 7/7/15 using same name.  Threatened me with 2 counts "fraudulent activity" on my name, but they messed up and used my maiden name.  I have been married for 4 years. I have received calls like this in the past.  They are telephone scams.  Please perform background checks on phone numbers when you receive calls from people you do not know stating that you owe money you know nothing about.  It will save protect you from being a victim of a scam.

Ginni,

I totally agree.  They could certainly scare someone in to believing that they were going to jail.  I appreciate your comments, at least I know that I am not the only one being hassled.  So, thank you!!

My 68 year old mother called me in a panic yesterday.  She received a call from this number.  Thanks to my brother for going on the internet to see that it was a scam.  It brought my mom to tears.  She really was believing she was going to jail.  So did I.

Being in ordinary civil debt is not a crime and you cannot be arrested for it.  Ignore these people and block their calls.  If you were the suspect in the sort of crime they talk abut, you'd have heard about it from law enforcement.  You would NOT have heard about it from some scammery scummery debt collector.  You can check this out yourself by simply going down to the local police department and telling them about the call.

Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection  (Threatening criminal prosecution to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Act)

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
