Calls originate in India and Pakistan. They spoof local numbers. Like to use area code 202 so people might think they are located in Washington DC. Ignore and block the calls.
Received a call from this number. Left computer Message claiming to be from IRS and filing a lawsuit against us. When I called the number back no answer. I looked the number up on Google and found based in Seattle, Wash. through Verizon. I don't know for sure who this is but be aware of them. The number is all that comes up on caller id
I'm in Indiana. Just got the same call as Not Born Yesterday. I'm not either. There are several of these threatening frightening scams going around. DO NOT RESPOND. It confirms your phone number is genuine. Not that it will help them, but I think they sell lists between themselves of real numbers. At least once per week we get a call alleging to be Windows Tech. I played along once to confirm my suspicion. Wanted to "fix" my computer from remote site. Yeah, I'm going to let a stranger access to my computer. When you get frightening calls, take a breath, and remember Windows is made by MS and if you've got a computer problem, you will get a letter from MS. Ditto this IRS scam. If any of us had an IRS problem, we would gat mammoth legal paperwork, not a recorded call. Mine was recorded. The worse the job market is the more criminals will get creative to steal money. This reminds me of mobs during the a Depression. Sort of. But, I don't believe these creeps can hurt us unless we give them info. Some people must be or these creeps wouldn't be proliferating. The Windows scam is at least a year old and they all have foreign accents, too. This is my 2nd IRS scam call. Just ignore them. If I'd had a person, I would have played along to find out how/what their plan was to steal everything I own.
These scammers called at least 6 times yesterday (I also live in Indiana), as well as multiple calls to many of my friends. A friend received a live call, and played along for half an hour. They threaten that police are poised and ready to arrest them if they don't send "$____" amount of money within 45 minutes. In her case, the heavily accented caller told her nearly $5,000 from "taxes owed." I'm kind of surprised that anyone would fall for this, but they are pushy and high pressure to act before you think. Just as you said, if the IRS believed that you owe them money there would be a MOUNTAIN of paperwork, and at the VERY LEAST, an opportunity to prove that you do not owe what they say you do- or to pay what you agree that you do owe. We abolished debtor's prisons in America, and as far as I can see we still have a constitutional right to due process. Listen to the above poster, and take a deep breath!
UPDATE - To the info above - Received a second call today but from a different number - 9173101120 - again stating IRS - I called the number just to see and man with foreign accent answered - stated he was with IRS - I asked him what his game was - he hung up.
I got a first call by same number but this one ended with a 3 with a recorded message stating they had a lawsuit against me and i call the number back and it sounds busy.
