I find it hilarious that you are an educated college professor and actually felt the need to research this. What a clown. They had a recording tell me to call them, The DEA, because I bought illegal prescription drugs. I call them back every five minutes begging them to let me turn myself in.
Officer Jeb Dawson, with a very strong middle eastern accent left me a messaging saying he was calling from Federal Legally Defender Law Firm...and goes on with the whole "intimidating" normal nonsense that most of these scammers have attempted. Left the number to call immediately upon receiving the message, which I am not planning to return.
If I get another call, I will politely inform them that I know my rights as they pertain to my credit and I have contacted the FTC and Attorney general offices.
I also got a call today from this number. Now the person claims to be with Fayetteville Legal Defender and Law Firm..saying he has 3 cases involving my social and that I need to call back if I want to be on the paper side of this case. He said he is an officer and his father the Capt. didnt have time to call....I could tell right away that this was some type of scam and I am not calling back either.
I have gotten so sick of getting these phones calls I called them back this morning after I reported them to the FTC and the attorney generals office. I informed the person that answered of this fact and was told that alot of people have reported them and that nothing has happened and nothing will happen to them. And that they will not stop calling and the calls will get more frequent. These people have to be stopped. I am going to call the attorney general in Texas to also file a complaint. If anyone has any other ideas let me know.
I have received REPEATED calls from various numbers with the SAME voice, offering different "officer's" names. They have called my place of employment, speaking with my director on a day that I was at a meeting off site. That is embarrassing; when I returned, needless to say, I had to endure questions from my employer as to what this pertained to. I HAVE reported this harrassment to the attorney general's office as well and obviously no action has been taken on my behalf, and from the list of other complaints here, not on the behalf of anyone else either. What is the point of having the option of making the reports to various agencies, when the harrassment has not and evidently will not be stopped? I am going to call my local police department, as well as the Texas police department and file complaints against this outfit as well. These sorts of calls to my employer place my job in jeopardy. I will not return any of these calls.
I received a call from this number looking for someone with the same first name, but different last name, the call came into my work, and then was transferred to my cell phone. The person calling had a strong middle eastern accent as well. I tried to explain that the person that they had the wrong person, and when I told them my last name, then they said... oh, then we are trying to find (my name), I asked to be transferred to an Attorney that spoke better English. I was transferred, but not to an Attorney. When I asked for his bar number, he couldn't give me one. He cited his claim, then proceeded to devulge a social security number for a different person, credit references, personal references, and employer information for someone who is not me. When I explained that now he has broken all kinds of laws including HIPA and FDCPA, he hung up on me. I have reported this action to the AG's office, and would encourage all to do the same.
