This is another "I am calling about your computer" scam. And, this is a spoofed, or fake, phone number.
Do NOT give out any information. Don't even give out your name, and NEVER give out financial information.
Do NOT do anything that the caller asks you to do. They may ask you to go to a website to download a program, or to go to a website to enter information that you shouldn't be giving out. Or, they may ask you to call a number. It doesn't matter what they ask you to do, DO NOT do it.
Instead, FIRST, tell the caller that you know it's a scam. SECOND, tell them not to call again (they may not call again after, but they probably will). THIRD, hang up. And FOURTH, report it to the FCC -- Do NOT report it to the Do Not Call List. They don't handle scammers. The FCC, FBI, Attorney General's offices, and police departments, do.
You can file a report with the FCC by going to this address (and, please Google this, or use another search engine, to double check the address if you aren't sure): http://www.fcc.gov/complaints
You may also file a report with your state's Attorney General's office, which you will have to look up for yourself. Sorry.
This falls under the heading of "Telemarketing, Prerecorded Messages, Caller ID Spoofing, and Do-Not-Call", so make sure to check that option on the FCC page.
Please remember that the phone number was STOLEN from someone else, and the original owner is NOT at fault. So looking up where the phone number is supposed to be located is meaningless.
And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pass this information on, because people don't seem to understand that the Do Not Call list isn't meant for this type of thing, AND because people don't know what else to do.
These guys just called me as well and the guy was EXTREMELY rude. Said he was calling about internal errors in my computer and when I tried to question him he talked to me as if I am an idiot.
Not sure what their scam is because I told him to shove it and hung up. Also...said he was calling from Las Vegas. The number is a New York number, so they're either spoofing it or routing calls.
