I just received the same message. It was a recording from a Steve Martin (with an accent) from the US Treasury enforcement department and I was going to be taken to federal court if I didn't pay. I don't owe any money. He said " Help us to help you". I got this call 3x's in a row yesterday on my home telephone. Have been trying to call the IRS ever since but cant get through at the 800-829-1040 number.
This is a SCAM!! If you get a call from this number-it is not legit! FRAUD-BEWARE
I just received a recorded message on my VM. Of course half of it was cutoff so I could not hear the beginning but he indicated that ignoring this message would result in criminal charges in front of a grand jury. He indicated that I needed to call him back and cooperate so that I could help him help me. A good example of amateur social engineering. He called from 213 401-2830 but left the 2744 as his call back number.
Following is a copy of a message I left on another site regarding this scammer.
Got another call the next day, but he didn't leave a message. Called back and he answered the phone "Dept. of Legal Affairs US Treasury." After a large number of "hellos" when I didn't respond, he hung up. Guess he doesn't have callerID, or he would have called back. There is a special website to report this type of impersonation: www.TIGTA.gov. Click the red button on the right labelled "IRS Impersonation Scam reporting." Apparently there is a lot of this happening, but I believe this guy is a real amateur because this is really his phone number, not spoofing someone else's. Maybe he's small potatoes that Treasury won't bother with. I'm thinking of buying a police whistle...
Same exact thing is happening. He called starting at 5:30am and has not stopped today. It is only a recording saying I need to call back. I have tried just to tell him to back off but the lines are busy. I love that there are sites like this one that we can go to, to find out the scammers. Thank you.
