I just received the same message. It was a recording from a Steve Martin (with an accent) from the US Treasury enforcement department and I was going to be taken to federal court if I didn't pay. I don't owe any money. He said " Help us to help you". I got this call 3x's in a row yesterday on my home telephone. Have been trying to call the IRS ever since but cant get through at the 800-829-1040 number.
This is a SCAM!! If you get a call from this number-it is not legit! FRAUD-BEWARE
A client of mine got this same call. Talk about a scam! It is not the IRS!
I am a CPA. The IRS does not send us letters unless if we have a power of attorney on file. In which case we will receive a copy of the letter they send to our client. They do not call and threaten arresting anyone!
These people need to be caught!
Got another call the next day, but he didn't leave a message. Called back and he answered the phone "Dept. of Legal Affairs US Treasury." After a large number of "hellos" when I didn't respond, he hung up. Guess he doesn't have callerID, or he would have called back. There is a special website to report this type of impersonation: www.TIGTA.gov. Click the red button on the right labelled "IRS Impersonation Scam reporting." Apparently there is a lot of this happening, but I believe this guy is a real amateur because this is really his phone number, not spoofing someone else's. Maybe he's small potatoes that Treasury won't bother with. I'm thinking of buying a police whistle...
I have been receiving a call from the number: 213-401-2744, saying that I owe money to the IRS and that is a Federal offense, etc and he wants to help me. That clearly is a scheme/ This phone number was reported by other guys already. I will report this call to IRS, DOJ and Treasury Dept. The person is giving a name of Steve Martin !!!
Received call and message left on our answering machine. Heavy accent. Glad for the info.....Thanks just ignore the call....all of them had here today alone!!
