Called me up and I get a answering machine telling me I have to pending charges against me and I need to call back with some random case number. So I called back and a lady answers, she tells me she's a state official. I get no information other than that and her name. She told me I had charges against me for a defaulted payday loan I took out in 2011.
Never mind that I have never taken out a payday loan in my life, I was 17 in 2011, I couldn't legally do anything of that caliber without a guardians cooperation.
I told her as much as she simply told me they had already tried mailing me and calling me about the money I owe but never got a response (which is [***] because I never received any warning prior to this initial call). I ask her who the company I owe money to is and she can't tell me anything other than 'Liberty Group', that they own several payday loan companies and she wouldn't know which one specifically I took money from. Couldn't give me an address or phone number to reach them at, told me I'd have to find that myself.
I ask her what her company is and an address I can find that at and she can't tell me that either. All she could really tell me was how much money I specifically owe and that I could pay them back directly over the phone now or dispute it in court. So I tell her to serve me then, I never took out any money and I have no plans on paying back something I never got.
She told me 'fine, Happy Holidays' and hung up.
I called them back about 10 minutes later because I realized they didn't have my current address (I was thinking they were legit at this point) and I wanted to know the name of their company so I could mail them about not calling me anymore.
A dude answers this time, his name was Antonio, and he gives me a bigger go around than the previous lady. I asked him several time who his company was and all he told me was that they were a mediator trying to resolve a debt for a company and that it wasn't them I needed to be investigating, but the company I owed money to.
I ask him why they didn't ask for my current address. He tells me that they have my social and my addresses follow my social so they have my current address.
And he's not wrong, when you put in a change of address to your postal service they do send all documentation (official or not) to that address, but the one he had 'on file' I hadn't lived at for over a year. No matter how many times I asked for specific information, he kept skating around the questions until I finally hung up in frustration.
Its been two weeks since I had those two conversations and I have yet to receive any mail about the payday loan but they've called me back several times and I jut ignore them.
They keep calling and threatening and harassing saying I'm going to get served papers on an outstanding balance from a credit card I haven't had since 2001. From a company that went bankrupt in 2003. The first call the lady couldn't give me a name for the company she worked for??? I blocked them.
