This information was in April issue of Costco magazine. I received same call last week. It was a recording
left on my answering machine.
I just got this call. It was broadcast on our local news about a week ago. Just don't call back. If you do, they'll have your number and probably call more often. I'd love to catch these [***] in the act.
Same message and call back number. I called back and he knew my name and address. He provided 'his' IRS badge number. When I started to question him regarding this being a 'last notice' and about why I haven't received anything in the mail (certified letter, etc) from the IRS, he hung up.
Well, Dummy Me actually returned a call from this number, and got an answer which sounded like it was from a big call center, people with accents that sounded like they were from the Indian subcontinent. I was directed to drive to my bank and withdraw cash ($4.910)--- the gentleman said he would stay on the line while I did this--- and then he would give me a name and an account number where I would wire the money to the federal accountant/official who would then apply the money to the money I owed the IRS. Well, I may be dumb but not THAT dumb. I tried to be diplomatic and say that I was at work and could not leave, and the gentleman offered that I "would not be able to work at all if I were in jail", and that in one hour federal officials would be there to arrest me. 0--kay. I wished him all the best and hung up. And felt SO stupid that I had not Googled this number before calling it.
