I also received a few phone calls from this number. The first one I received was from a guy named Melvin. The second from a guy named Allen. Unfortunately, I was so scared that I did pay. They had threatened me saying that if I didn't return their call, or have my attorney call, I would be arrested and that they would call my employer to tell them what kind of person I am.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
returned "samantha's call and told her i wanted a receipt for what i had paid before she would see another dime from me. she told me she could just go ahead and have me arrested if i didnt cooperate. asked her for the name of the company she worked for and the address. gave me this info-- clifton law firm, 567 thurmond st, nw unit 321, atlanta ga 30314. try to verify this with yellow pages and address search and can find nothing can match it. she told me she would send me a receipt for what i had paid. funny she has never asked me for my address and i have never given it to her. i am going to take the guys advice from here and report this. not a happy camper cause i am out a substantial amount of money and know i will never see it.
