You received an IP relay call. The relay is legitimately used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate with people who aren't. The relay operator has no information about who is calling you or who you are. If you have classified ads running, most likely someone from a foreign country is trying to get you to wire them money using a bogus check. The unfortunate beauty of IP Relay is that anyone can use it anonymously, even a fraudster. There's a chance it may be a deaf person calling to inquire about your ad but most likely not. You could just take the call and ask the person calling to call you back through the "state relay" using their TTY. if you don't feel right about it, my suggestion is to be nice to the relay operator and just hang up each time you receive a relay call.
My 13 year old daughter has had calls from that number the past two nights at reallly late hours. I instruct my children no to answer calls from numbers you don't know or on your list....
I typed the number into Google to see if I could find out more about it and ended up here.
Recieved the IP messanger lady at work. Decided to go along with it becuase I would feel terrible if the person was really deaf or something.
Well, he stated the person's name was BILL. Bill asked for my wor e-mail so he could place an order for flyers, so I gave it to him.
Than I recieved an e-mail right away asking for a quote on 98,500 flyers, which is a huge huge huge amount, so I became suspisious right away. Also, on the flyer he only wanted the words "SERVICE TO GOD AND MAN". I sent the qoute, and he approved, than asked me to send the flyers, using his own company, to his church in Ghana since he couldnt pick them up. He stated that his wife was having a baby in the UK and he had to leave right away. Also, he said he'd send his credit card info right away.
I gave all the info to my oss, becuase I knew it was fishy.Turns out, after doing some resaerch, it was a spam.
Well, some man called right away using the name Bill Chris and asked if we were going to send them. We informed the man that we could not fulfill the order.
Three days later... same thing. Same name, same number, same exact e-mail only this time he wanted "SAVE CHILD"S HEART" on the flyers. I immediatly told him we could fulfill the order.
If he calls back, we plan to get other authorities involved.
Got a call from (408)822-1645 on an add I have for golden retriever puppies -- same deal. They asked me to email them -- I did and recieved an immediate response asking me to cash checks and send the balance on the the "home office" in the UK -- they never even ASKED me the price of the puppy! This is NOT the first such call I have gotten as I got one on ANOTHER add a little over a year ago but THAT call came at 3AM so I hung up. What puts me in a panic is that I have a deaf Mother-in-law who USES this system and I was affraid (at 3AM!!!) that something had happened to on of them!! Isn't there ANY way to STOP these people??!! I TRIED my local police department -- I got no where. I complained to the IP_Relay people -- never even heard back from them. I just don't get it!
I got call stating that i was being kicked out of college, losing my scholorship, and had to leave my apartment in 7 days an 1230 in the morning. I emailed the college and they had no idea what i was talking about.
I have received probably 15 calls over the last two days from someone (no. 408.822.1645) saying he is working with something dealing with the hearing impaired. I told him I would report him if he called again, but he still calls. I don't answer and he leaves voicemails that say I'm not going to leave you alone. It's weird.
