I had been out of town and was a few days behind opening my mail. The letter was dated "March 24th 2009" but the type was grayer and smaller than the rest of the letter and it didn't seem like a proper heading for a business letter that contained a check for $3985.00. Mine was drawn on the Bank of Texas, sent from a Cleveland address and the plain envelope had a Canadian stamp and no return address of any sort. Hm... Thought I might call anyway but thanks to this website, I obviously won't bother. Thank you all for the information. I will contact the Bank of Texas and the postmaster.
I live in Jacksonville Florida and received the exact same letter. Obviously a scam but I have to admit the check looks very real. I used to work for a major credit card company in the fraud department and this scam looks very real. Do not fall for it. Once the check is deposited they have all your information and can wipe out your checking account. Typical scenario is: you deposit and it it credits to your account but then bounces and by then they have taken everything. Wathc out for this and shred it as soon as you get it!
My daughter, who is a minor, received the same letter and check. What we did is we opened an account that is locked and cannot be accessed except for in person. Of course, our bank flagged it immediately. So, today, we notified the US Postal Inspectors Fraud Dept., and they are going to take it from there. Hopefully, with someone contacting the FBI and now the US Postal Service, these people will get a well deserved vacation in the custody of our federal penal system.
I got the same letter. All you people are scammers I hope you get caught and rot in jail from making my mom thinking we were rich I pray and hope you guys grow, get a real job, or find a better hobby.
