I also received an automated call asking me to call 877-828-5743, and they gave me an 8 digit PIN to enter. The reason for this is so that they DO NOT have to ask for personal info such as SSN or DOB. This 8-digit number identifies you as the person they're trying to reach without having divulge personal info. So, if they call you and ask for SSN and DOB, just hang up the phone! I called UHC by calling the number on the back of my insurance card and the representative told me that the number was their coordination of benefits department just calling to check if I had additional forms of insurance. She said she would update my info directly, and I could disregard the phone calls. I have not received another one since then. So, I guess the number is legit, HOWEVER, I think the number is also being used by a phishing scam (you know it is possible to spoof numbers.. there is a computer program that can trick your caller ID into displaying any phone number that is entered into the program). The other comments say that they there was a live operator asking for SSN and DOB, but I was never asked for that personal info. The UHC rep told me that they would NEVER ask for that personal info over the phone, unless YOU call THEM. That is why they give you the 8-digit PIN to enter instead of entering your personal info. So, if someone is calling you and asking to call that number and give them your SSN and DOB, that is a scam!
Her post was from 16 Jul 2014
I think that any damage would already be done.
The person you are replying to is probably a troll, why else would they flame a post from 16 Jul 2014.
I'm not a troll and I "flamed" that old post in a "rude" manner as a warning to future readers to not make the same mistake as Deborah and hopefully wake these people up to the fact that posting your phone number publicly is extremely dangerous. I often see people here and on whocallsme who think these two sites are the official places to request to be removed from telemarketer lists. They say "don't call me" and then give out their phone number.
BTW this number is United Healthcare. I called and confirmed with them. They just needed to know if I had a secondary insurer.
And they've called me yet again. I answered because I knew it was UHC. The automated voice thing only asked to confirm my name, it didn't want any private info. I had already called them directly days ago and answered this question live, with their representative, Tamara, who said she updated the info in the system and I wouldn't be receiving any further calls like this.
jut called my cell, I don't accept unknown numbers, so sent it to vm, a 2 min vm with nothing on it? blank? But seeing the other posts, I have had no health care for years due to the economy so has to be a fraud, they could get it from hospital or doctors selling #'s, yes it's illegal but many companies do it for money, the DMV used to sell numbers and info years ago until it became illegal. I worked in fraud investigations for mortgage loan company, never ever give out info even to your legitimate company. Real employees of real companies still commit fraud. As example we helped inight 2 of our own employees at a local branch office, along with paid employess making fake bank statements at 2 prominent national banks. Fraudsters of high magnitude have no ethics. Your own company would not ask you this type of info, as for example my phone cell service, asks for last 4 digits because "employees" are not allowed to see the whole thing or that's all they are allowed to ask to verify. Otherwise there are other ways. But think about it, if you do have an account or contract with health care service or anyone else, they already have that info, no need to update. You update addresses, people don't go around changing their own birth date or social number right? just think logically and you know to hang up. but we always told people to reportt, Mortgage companies and websites can't "arrest" only police or FBI. I have reported many cases personally to the FBI and others. report, report, report. not just here. every FBI office and governemtn sites has a place to report phone fraud, identity theft, or on-goiing callers like this one asking for social #'s, they do track them, they do look at ones with most hits, it does work. But also protect your information in paper format, still the most used place for fraud and identity theft over computerized records. Unlocked mail boxes, papers in trash, even just a name and address on a back of a magazine is enoug to start a composite identity theft. They will use somoene elses pictures, work etc. Most high-end identity theft is is a new composite person made up of several identities.
