A week or so ago I filed an application on-line for my Social Security benefits. Yesterday I received a call from someone who left a message from this number saying they needed some additional information before my application. They number they left to call back was 1-866-226 - and luckily for me, I could not understand the last 4 digits and tried looking the numbers up on line. I then thought about calling back the number from which the call came. When I looked that number up on line, low & behold, I found it was a scam!
Actually I received a follow up e-mail from them, this was a legitimate call from Social Security. They wanted to verify my earnings to pay me. Now I feel dumb for thinking it was a scam but with so many scams, it is difficult to know what to believe sometimes.
I was expecting some money from SC and she said that there was a mistake and she was going to fix.
Promising me lots more money, and when I received a note of the SC they had denied the full amount.
She must have diverted the funds to another account. The big problem is she has access to my SC number and other info she got from me.
