I applied for my ss benefits on 9-04 & rec'd a call from this # on 9-06. They left no msg or a call back #. Since I do not live in the NYC area, I'm puzzled as to why ss in NYC would call me! If they call again, I'm simply going to tell them I'll call my local ss offi e. With all the scams taking place, I trust no one that requests personal info over the phone.

filed for benefits on thursday 9/12 and on saturday the 14th received a call from this number. when i questioned who he was , he said i told you i am mr. allen. i said i was mary, queen of scots, but why should he believe me. i asked what his phone number was and he gave me the local number. when i asked why he was calling on saturday, he said it was overtime. the number on caller id said it was us government. sounds like a weasel deal to me.

oops. mary queen of scots here. apologies to mr. allen. he really was from social security. i verified it this morning. that is a trunk number that you can't call back. make sureyou listen to the whole deal before you hang up on them. everyone i spoke with was professional and courteous.

Received a call but didn't answer. They left a message saying it was Social Security calling about my recent application. I called back and it's legit.

Thanks all for your comments!

Since my local office knew nothing about this, I called social security's 800 number, sat on hold for 50 minutes, but found out that the agent left a note on my account saying he did make a "courtesy call" to me. The woman who checked this for me explained that the number you see on caller ID is a trunk number that you cannot call back. This is for the representatives security. Big weight off my mind.
