Chris Rod is absolutely correct. We use Care Credit for dental charges and were called from this exact number to ensure that it was my husband who had just used the card for another dental bill. It's a great service and it's a good idea for followups to be made.
866-266-0878 is the phone number that calls in to GE Capital Retail Bank fraud detection unit. When a fraud rep calls out to a cardholder you may notice their direct extension as your caller ID; ie, 937-534#. It is not a scam and it is not marketing. However, it could be a wrong number--they mis-dialed a digit. When a rep calls out they may not leave a message because they are only allowed to hold the line for so many rings before they are required to hang up--FTC regs, I believe. If your phone rings, for example, more than 7 times they have to hang up. Also, per FTC, I believe, they can only call twice a day.
So, again, this number is not a scam it is GECRB's Fraud detection department calling you about potential fraud on your card or potential fraudulent credit applications.
Furthermore, they will NEVER ask you for your credit card number over the phone because they already have it (right, they called you). So, in the event, do not give your CC# out because the number could be spoofed and there may be a real fraudster on the other end of the line.
Received this call twice today and they were just verifying that I did in fact open a Sams Club card this past weekend. They did not ask for any identifying information other than my name which he already knew.
Turned out to be Fraud Prevention from the CC company servicing my JCPenney acct. I recently added my spouse as an authorized user, and they just wanted to confirm that before they sent out the additional card.
