This number 9729614040, called my number to tell me there is a lawsuit against my mother Heidi Davidson with a claim number pending, 201634595 with a final notice... thank you, please have them not call me!
This message was left on my phone a number of times when I was out of town on a long trip. This is the last time I heard from them. Is there any reason to be concerned? None of the phone calls mentioned my name or any detail of cause of legal action. I am pretty sure this is a hoax but I would like to know how did the caller get my company's number after it was closed 16 months ago?

"then(?) I decision has been made on your behalf concerning a legal matter that has been filed against you. Numerous attempts were made to contact you with no response. To avoid any legal actions call NCA Recovery Group at 972-961-4040. You'll need your attorney information or full payment to avoid any legal proceedings. You can press any key on your phone to be connected to the office of NCA Recovery Group. Your file number is 20160991."
Received VM on 6-1-16 stating the call was from NCR Recovery Group and that multiple attempts have been made to contact with no response and that a decision has been made on my behalf regarding a legal matter .I was given a file # and told to have my attorney information or full payment and return call to 972-961-4040. The call originated from 972-954-9391 and used a former last name that was changed in1990. Fortunately I didn't return the call and checked the internet. Sure glad that I did.
Did they happen to know your S. S. # and home address? They called my husband saying the exact same thing on Friday but gave them his SS # and home address. Neither of us has had any credit card or debt with any company and its disturbing that they have his personal info.
This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this, all for an alleged or nonexistent debt. One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying. They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number
If you feel you SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS. Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039):

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
