I got this same scam call from Sterling, Va. ... Idiot didn't identify who he was calling for, and even though he said it was a "time-sensitive" matter and that I should call back as soon as I received the call, he didn't leave a call back number; had to get it off my caller ID. When I called the number back, it cut off after several rings - no voice mail. Same badge number and name given - Jonathan Knight, Badge #06719. Computerized voice, sounded like he was from India.
I get these calls all the time. What they are really trying to do is to get you to let them put a Remote Control Program on your computer so they can remotely fix your computer or so they say. They most likely once the program is on your computer attempt to get at sensitive data you may have stored there.
The person frequently says they are receiving reports from my computer indicating errors on it. I reply to this idiot that my computer doesn't send him errors and that my computer is working just fine and then hang up on him. Nowadays though these calls don't even identify themselves as being from Microsoft.
Of course, you will be lucky to receive the letter from the IRS if they use the US Mail. The US Mail lost 2 of my Certified Mail letters (never delivered one. The other delivered after 45+ days). This occurred in a matter of within 3 or 4 months of each other.
Don't know the text of your call but on my call, Jonathon Knight never specifically states who he is calling about. This is the second clue this is a fraudulent call. The first call is that the IRS will send letters on this type of subject and not use the phone.
Received a voice mail message from a Jonathan Knight (sp?), badge ID #06719 on 3/12/2015 at 3:22 pm AST - he called from #571-210-5961 claiming he was calling from the federal investigation department of the IRS regarding fraud and misconduct that I’m hiding from the federal government needs to be rectified and that it was a time sensitive and urgent request. I knew it was suspicious because I'm an honest person and a proper (English speaking) IRS representative wouldn't have made the request sound so threatening. I have nothing to hide so it was almost laughable.
