Got the same call 3 times.I picked up the last one only because I am trying to sell something on Craigslist. This guy had a heavy Indian accent and said his name was Sam or John--yeah right. He said there are viruses and spyware being downloaded to my computer. I told him I have programs running in the background to detect that. He kept repeating the deal about my computer going to die shortly.
I hung up on him.
I got a call from these same people yesterday, but there was no one on the other end. I looked the number up here and knew what to expect. When the phone rang today, I was upstairs, but my upstairs phone doesn't have CID, so I picked up on the first ring and said "hello." A man with an Indian accent told me that he was from Microsoft and had detected a problem with my computer.
I barked out a laugh and said "Dude, you are so full of s***." He abruptly hung up.
They really need to add "scammer" to the "call type" dropdown on this site.
Usually call everyday, this time I anwsered the phone and said " Hello, Please take me off your call list, If you are selling anything, I do not want it, so please remove me. Caller heavy accented women replied: "No I won't take you off my list, and I will call you every day" I replied again t "remove me and if you do call me again I will report you to the FCC" caller" OK you can do that" and disconnected.
CID Was New York - 718 205-0445. Heavy Indian accent - horrible connection, sort of like when you call for "real" help on your computer and you enter that long distance scratchy tunnel that eventually leads you to - well probably the same person. Then the dance started, he stated my computer was connecting to a server and was trying to download software which indicated a virus. I said thats great, "so you have my computer name?". Ah yes, and he restated the claim. I said, if that's the case please provide my computer name, the MAC and the IP address associated so that I may contact my ISP to confirm the traffic is transmitting as he claims. He's slightly frustrated now and I started to dig in a little deeper, "so are you saying the my current Virus protection is not blocking this traffic?". He said well I have your "CLSID" I said really - what is it so I can verify your claim. Silence then, scratchy sound went away - so did he. Tell the elderly folks in your family that also use computers that they are perfect targets for this scam. Everyone fears viruses, thats what they are counting on.
