We got the same message left on the voicemail. Twice. Two different guys with accents that were hard to understand saying that my father was under investigation even provided a case #. My mom started to get worried thought it was something serious. Told her not to do anything because it was a scam. The IRS contacts people by mail not phone! The whole thing just seemed fishy.
I received the same thing on my cell phone today from 202-241-7811 and 202-241-6231. Total Scam, easy to spot, but I've worked in the financial industry for 15 years. Someone else who hasn't grown up in the U.S. or is more casual with their finances might be more easily fooled. When I called each back, they only provided their name and officer number (both bogus). They insisted on my personal information before they could proceed, which of course I didn't provide. When I challenged their identity, one hung up and the other got indignant until I told them I'd call law enforcement, so which he didn't seem to care (probably because they know it does no good being in a foreign country). I'm very temped to spam them with my own calls to waste their time, but I overheard dozens of people in a call center talking, so I'm sure it's just a churn room.
Got this call today. Same as all comments above... I told him sounds like a scam and to go pound sand... he said cops will come in an hour and hung up.
I called the cops and they snickered that its a scam :)
Looks like this is a known number now 202-241-7811 should be blocked somehow!
