Got a phone number 202 864 17 91 call saying I owed 49805.93 from taxes due 2006 2007 a and 2011 said I received mail back in December me and my wife don't remember also receiving number from 206-201-2799also saying they are IRS did not leak case number or even how much I owe per year said all paperwork was sent to the court house in Washington DC haha joke
Call by this number, claimed they were IRS..I played along for a while...
Fact - No government agency will have a DID (this is a direct number) into a location. The amount of traffic would completely overwhelm the trunks into the location. (I have 10 years of telecom experience)
Also, it's highly unlikely that calls would not be routed through an IVR..call any IRS number and the wait is hours to speak to anyone..call this number and it goes to a receptionist right away which is a red flag in itself.
On a recent call back to the number, I identified myself as the 'guy who spilled his coffee earlier' and was transferred back to my scam artist, David Brown.

Just got a call from this number, woman with Indian accent said I owed the IRS a few thousand dollars in back taxes (incredible since I'm single, own no property, have no major investments, claim 0 on my 1040 and am still short-form with standard deductions.) Planned to play along for a while but I wanted to go pee slightly more.
Woman had decent command of English, minor errors. Noise in b/g that sounded like a TV or something. Was told this undepayment could result in loss of my driver's license (?!?!), fines, jail time, etc. and I could speak with a supervisor to work things out. Had no choice, appeal, payment options, etc. So, yeah entire thing didn't pass the sniff test.
Second call I've gotten like this today! The first was from a different number. Same as the others have said - thick accent, a lot of background noise, and they called well after 5 pm DC time like any government employee is getting paid to work late...
I'm in Florida. Indian accented woman asked for my husband, by name, I said he wasn't available. Asked if I was Mrs. Said her name was Shirley Carter from IRS. I verified her name 3 times and asked how I could help. She hung up.
IRS has a TOLL FREE NUMBER. 1-800-tax-1040. Their employees will give you a series of information when they identify themselves. They have an automated phone center to field the call. The wait is LONG.
If a person owes money to the IRS the person is very aware of the tax debt. Additionally, the IRS also always forwards correspondence to inform a person of a debt or a dispute on a tax return. They don't just call out of the blue and tell a person that money is owed.
