Same MO as those below but this operator was a bit dumber that some of those described below. I asked who she got my number from and she said the resource department. I then told her that it was the resource department that tried to infect my computer last week and asked why she wanted to help me with something that her company caused,,, the phone went silent and then she asked what number tried to infect my computer - - - duh! She offered to hang up and I suggested that was to her advantage.
Your selections below don't allow identification of this call as a scam or malicious intrusion but that is what it is.
Sam Watson called me from this number (and at extension 8002 ) and tried to get me to run "evntvwr" which he said would show me all the viruses that my machine had and then they could help me get rid of them. I knew it was a scam from the get-go but decided to just waste his time instead of letting him burn somebody else. I think that's the best tactic to use with these criminals; just do humanity a public service and try to drive them nuts. Sometimes I go all the way down to where they want my credit card or bank account information numbers ..... I just put on a "stupid old geezer act" and give them bogus information that will never verify correctly. Last year I had a couple of Indian women in a half hour long spitting rage of frustration. I thought they were going to have a stroke! I kept contradicting myself and getting all the information screwed up. I told them I was on six meds and I might have gotten them mixed up but that I really WANTED their services and if they would just BEAR WITH ME and help out an old veteran that I'd be sooooo thankful.
I think of it as an opportunity to practice a character act, like Steve Martin or Jonathan Winters or one of the Saturday Night Live people would put on. Maybe you can record the session and play it back for your friends for laughs.
It would be nice if the police bunco squad or the FBI or the US Attorney's office would give a crap about this stuff, but believe me, they do NOT. I just hung up from calling the police. They couldn't care less about this stuff. When you try to report it all you will hear is, "it's just so common" and "nobody has the resources" and "well, sir, if you know it's a scammer then just hang up". So all the the clueless old folks are the ones who fall for this and they lose their funds but each individual case is such small potatoes that the scammers get away with it forever.
They were insisting I go to my computer and log in that I had critical viruses. Names given were Jenny Watson and Alex Smith. They said they were with Microsoft.
Got a call from Nick identifying himself as a technician from Windows Technical Department stating that my computer was sending messages to them regarding very dangerous viruses and I should allow him to access my files to get rid of them.
I get their phone number and told him I would call back when I buy a computer!
