Make sure you have your passport ready since you will need to fly to a country overseas. Of course once there if you are caught you are then subject to their laws. As to threatening them, they know it is a hollow threat and they have heard it all.
Received the same kind of call reported by Emily.. I saved the recording from Steve Modern threatening legal action if we did not call back.. Call received on Aug 30... Scam for sure..
In NV, we also received a call from this number saying this is the second warning from the 'US Treasury' and that we are subject to legal action. The caller had a heavy Indian accent and gave no name. We received a call like this earlier this year. The caller was very persistant about leaving messages, so I finally answered and told them I knew this was a scam and not to call again. When they called the last time, I reported it to the IRS on line. This time I will call a local IRS office and get the number blocked.
Received fraud call on Saturday. I am in Reno Nv. Will be calling LAPD Fraud Unit on Tuesday. Also will notify the Storey County Sherrif Office in Nevada.
Message on answering machine from 213-401-2952. Identified himself as Steve Modern (foreign accent) from the IRS, Indicated that this was an enforcement action - I would have to appear before a magistrate judge or grand jury if I didn't response. This is an obvious scam. The IRS would contact offenders by mail and wouldn't threaten action. This activity should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (can be submitted online) and also to the IRS.
