I really don't appreciate getting calls from all these places, especially since I am on the DO NOT CALL list.

These jerks have been calling 5-10 times a week for a year about a debt over 20 years old.  I made the mistake of answering my cellphone and confessing I remembered the debt before my wife snatched the phone from me (she was a little slow).  Then they actually managed to get my home phone number somehow the other day.  I'm so fed up I'm going to get a new cell and a magicjack. If anyone knows what agency to contact for this type of harrassment please post it.

Make a complaint to the consumer protection office of your state's Attorney General. You will be adding one more report to their files.

Portfolio Recovery has at least one lawyer hired to handle all inquiries from state attorneys general. His name is Brian Pearson. He does not reply to any correspondance you may send, only to orders from the atty. general that he respond to you. (PRA does not return recipts for certified letters, so don't bother paying $2.30 for one. The certified mail can be proven via the USPS database.)

After you report them, they will be required to actually follow the law in that all their calls will show "Portfolio Recovery" in the caller ID on your phone. Then you can easily avoid talking to them.

After my report to the Atty. Genl., they deicded to "cease collection" of the so-called debt I do not owe them, and which they have never verified even exists. So, they issued a 1099-C to the IRS for nearly $5000.00. The Pearson person had to admit the so-called debt they  had "bought" was nothing but a line on a print-out, the line gave a figure around $2200 for the so-called debt, but what he failed to mention is that PRA paid somewhere between $10 and $65.00 for this particular "debt." This gave us a chance to report fraud to the IRS.

Luckily, although the fraaudulent 1099-C must be attached to the tax return as if it were legitimate,  our income tax was not affected. Pearson admitted they "bought" the written-off debt for which a big bank had received generous tax and other credits, in 2001. He failed to explain why they waited until 2009 to decide to begin the extortion scam they engage in when they start harrassing you to send them money on the basis of this b.s.

Anyway, this morning I see from the caller ID these bottom-feeding vermin made thier 92nd call to our home since they decided to "cease collection." You gotta admit, they are such idiots, they are sort of entertaining,
