Claims I have been charged with fraudulent bank activity or fraudulent checks, I don't even have a bank account, we use prepaid debit/credit cards for all our transactions or cash. I put our numbers on the do not call list but so far it hasn't worked.
1. Fraudulent check charges would be brought by the local public prosecutor. Debt collectors have absolutely no influence on public prosecutors or police. Check charges are only brought at the complaint of the bank or financial institution, not some scummy debt collector. In any event a bank would notify you first if there were any irregularities in a check you might have written. And try to settle the matter with you. No debt collector would be involved.
2. Process servers do not let you know in advance they are gong to serve you. They don't ask you for an address. They just serve you. Process servers are only used in civil cases. In criminal cases warrants are used and are only used and served by duly constituted members of law enforcement. In some cases police make straight-out arrests. In no case is a debt collector involved.
3. As has been pointed out in previous posts, this is a total scam meant to scare you into sending someone some money.
If they continue to bother you, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
That is, if you can find them. They've been doing this sort of thing for years and no one has been able to location their focal point of operations. I'm betting it's someone's house or the rented back room of a commercial building somewhere in Texas.
Thanks for the good info! I've been getting lots of these calls lately from several different "companies" and many different phone numbers (both incoming and callback). I did file complaints with BBB and CFPB but they didn't see a problem. The state attorney general is looking into it. I also filed complaints with FCC. Oh well, it's great to have websites like this to know what's up. But folks like my parents aren't savvy enough to look for info like this and believe everything the caller says.
The caller (pre-recorded message) pretends to be serving a notice for appearance in court for a Katie Schofield regarding a case #5836705. No one is on the line. It's a bait to get you to call back. Don't do it. Somehow the company is being paid fees for return long-distance calls. The number they dialed is an office number for a mortuary that has never employed anyone named Katie Schofield. I'll report this to my local FBI office.
Getting the same calls saying two charges of fraud against my SSN, to call and ask for legal department.
Called number Sunday night figuring to get no live answer, got recorded message with no identifying
company name or anything as I figured, it is a scam. The calls came in on (412) 346-1349, Pennsylvania number.
