Steve,
They're all correct. It is from Craigslist, I'll tell you exactly what happened.
C-list changed their policies on posting multiple ads from the same account.
Many power users who post 100+ ads a day therefore must have multiple accts.
Now C.list requires each account to be phone verified.
Meaning you need a verification # sent by c.list to your phone to activate each acct.
Google: 'Craigslist PVA's' see what I mean
You'll see dedicated websites selling PVA's for $6-$13 each.
C-list says 1 posting per acct per 48 hrs, and no cross posting to multiple cities.
So imagine those power users need lot of phone #'s for cheap,
and this verification # he was hoping you'd pass along to him.
Power users even change their IP address, use proxies, to get around the rules.
I work at the restaurant and someone with caller ID "UCLA" said he was from the health department and someone would come to our restuarant to inspect. The guy was with very heavy Indian accent. When I asked him what town of health department, he can't even say it right. Same thing, he said I would receive another call within 5 seconds then I need to write down the code and he would call back for it. I told him I will call the health department tomorrow myself and will not give him the code. He got mad and said they actually received a complaint about our food and the inspector will come check the food. I did give me the code after that. Now think back and see all other comments about the calls, I think these people are trying to use our numbers to verify a craiglist account for some illegal stuff (they can't use their real numbers to verify account). not sure where we can complaint about this.
I Posted an AD today 12.29.10 and YES it (craiglist) asks for a call back number to verify your identity. SO Relax it is making sure You are You.. What Paula wrote is TOTALLY correct!!
Be smart people, don't give info to anyone unless necessary, and yes, there is someone spoofing these numbers to get info out of you. If the call is not from Craigslist, disregard it.
