Steve,
They're all correct. It is from Craigslist, I'll tell you exactly what happened.
C-list changed their policies on posting multiple ads from the same account.
Many power users who post 100+ ads a day therefore must have multiple accts.
Now C.list requires each account to be phone verified.
Meaning you need a verification # sent by c.list to your phone to activate each acct.
Google: 'Craigslist PVA's' see what I mean
You'll see dedicated websites selling PVA's for $6-$13 each.
C-list says 1 posting per acct per 48 hrs, and no cross posting to multiple cities.
So imagine those power users need lot of phone #'s for cheap,
and this verification # he was hoping you'd pass along to him.
Power users even change their IP address, use proxies, to get around the rules.
It's Craigslist, if they think there is suspicious activity on your account, they will require you to enter a phone # so they can send you a code to validate you and your account. The people who are scamming on Craigslist just enter a random phone # because the don't want to be traced. So they just enter random phone #'s which could be yours which triggers a call from Craigslist.
I got a call from a man with an Indian accent. He asked if I had requested to have marketing calls blocked. He said I would be receiving a call which contained a code and he would need that code when he called back. I could not tell if he was calling from Qwest or from Craig List. The number was blocked. After he hung up I blocked all anonymous calls using *87. I then received a call from the above number. It was a recording that said it was Craig List and they left a 4 digit code. Immediately after that I received more anonymous calls which got through despite my call blocking. I did not answer the first two calls. On the third I did answer and he requested the code. I told him I was not interested and hung up. When I try calling the number it's busy.
Bottom line is if you get a call from this number hang up and if they call back tell them you are reporting them.
This is a call from craigslist to confirm your posting to one of their lists. When you post on line with them they will sometimes state the category that you are posting in requires telephone verification. They will send it as text or code. They explain fully in their taped message. People, listen to the message, if you listened to the message you wouldn't have all these stupid [***] comments
