Steve,
They're all correct. It is from Craigslist, I'll tell you exactly what happened.
C-list changed their policies on posting multiple ads from the same account.
Many power users who post 100+ ads a day therefore must have multiple accts.
Now C.list requires each account to be phone verified.
Meaning you need a verification # sent by c.list to your phone to activate each acct.
Google: 'Craigslist PVA's' see what I mean
You'll see dedicated websites selling PVA's for $6-$13 each.
C-list says 1 posting per acct per 48 hrs, and no cross posting to multiple cities.
So imagine those power users need lot of phone #'s for cheap,
and this verification # he was hoping you'd pass along to him.
Power users even change their IP address, use proxies, to get around the rules.
Just got a series of calls from "David" with an Indian accent. The number he called from was initially 975-131-8311. He said he was calling from the Federal Communications Commission (a US agency, and we are Canadian) to put us on the do not call list. He said he was going to send an automated message with a verification number, then call back. The automated message came from 415-366-0260. When he called back, it was from a blocked number. He called back several times because we wouldn't give him the verification number. He was very insistent, and rude. After reading the above comments, I don't know what this person is up to, but I'm sure it's not legit.
Same thing from this number - said he was the health inspector and coming to inspect our restaurant because of lots of complaints. Our local health officer said this was a scam or prank call.
Obviously these other calls are from scammers posting scam craigslist ads. What they do is they enter YOUR phone number as the verification phone number for the ad, THEN they call you and give you a phony story in order for you to relay the verification code to them so they can post their ad. So be careful and don't do it!
mine was in FRENCH!!! some idiot who i was interested in renting a house from, had this number call me, and then called me back for the verification code. I understand now what is going on...they're trying to use OUR phone numbers to make themselves look legit! EFFERS!
