By calling the POLICE (I hope NOT 911). What would you being saying to them (as to the nature of your call)?
"aaahhh, Hello, POLICE DEPT:......
It’s almost midnight and I just now got a phone call from someone (i.e. a solicitor)trying to sell me a newspaper subscription from the SF Chronicle and I want to make a complaint because they shouldn't be calling people this late at night." etc, etc...
By calling the police, it would fall into the same category as to this story:
LIKE THE RECORDING OF A PERSON WHO HAD CALLED 911 because....
there was a spider in there house and the person calling, feared spiders, and they were afraid it was going to bite them and wanted the spider out of there house.....
I got several calls from this number for over a week. Today I finally managed to catch it and speak with a live person. I think it was from the san ramon valley times. It was their collections department claiming I had gotten a subscription with an automatic renewal clause and that I owed them the balance. I was really irritated about this because the only reason I "bought" the subscription was the high school student who knocked on my door explaining it was a fundraiser for his school and how it'd help him go to college, etc. More importantly, he assured me that I would not have to do anything to discontinue service.
It is not clear if this is a genuine call or not. I mean, did they really expect me to give them my credit card number over the phone? This seemed really suspect given that I didn't know who these people were. At any rate, I tried contacting the three newspapers in the "valley" area and none of them had an account with my name on it. So, I wonder if this really is a bona fide call or a scam of some sort.
I also got a call from 415-691-4608. They called me at work and claimed my Contra Costa Time has not been paid. My work number is not on our account??? Big flag, they also wanted a credit card/checking account number to continue the paper. Having been a victim of identity theft, I'm concerned,
They are a collection agency hired by cable companies to try to collect on delinquent accounts. I moved and forgot to cancel my service and return my boxes (my boyfriend already had cable and my dvrs got boxed up somewhere) so they wanted to collect the $200+ per box that I didn't return.
