If your [bank/credit union/credit card company] has detected suspicious activity on your account, they are NOT going to call you on the phone! They will simply refuse to honor your card and then wait for YOU to call THEM!!
Think about it!
You go to the store or you go on line to buy something and your card is denied. What will you do? You will flip the card over and call the 800 number on the back of the card. The person who answers will ask you a few questions to verify you are the real card holder (and the answers will not be anything on the card or anything likely to be in your wallet which might have been stolen). You may need to make the call from your home telephone so they can see YOUR CID.
If there has been improper use of your card, they are going to cancel the card and mail you a new one at your request.
They will NEVER, EVER call you from an automatic system and have a voice like R2D2 ask you to enter your sixteen digit account number.
These calls are ALWAYS SCAMS -- attempts to obtain information which can be used to bilk someone of money! You become that someone as soon as you enter your card number!
Received a recorded call on my cell phone saying my credit union account was being closed due to third party activity and to keep it open press "1" and then asked for a credit card number - at which point I hung up. The number is 734-513-7707. I called back but got a busy signal.
I received a call from this number Saturday night after 9:30 p.m. It was a recorded voice stating that my bank account was suspected of fraudulant use...so I hung up on the message and didn't let it finish. I don't have an account at the name of the bank they said, and my cell phone registered Michigan.
My husband's phone rang at almost 10:00 p.m. (did not answer) and it showed this number on the screen. I did a reverse look up on the number and it lists a company called "W Wnet" out of Troy, MI. I was surprised to see all of the comments on this website when I tried to research the company. I have also gotten text messages with this same phishing info on it. Just be careful everyone. These scam artists need to be strung up by their toes!
