If your [bank/credit union/credit card company] has detected suspicious activity on your account, they are NOT going to call you on the phone! They will simply refuse to honor your card and then wait for YOU to call THEM!!
Think about it!
You go to the store or you go on line to buy something and your card is denied. What will you do? You will flip the card over and call the 800 number on the back of the card. The person who answers will ask you a few questions to verify you are the real card holder (and the answers will not be anything on the card or anything likely to be in your wallet which might have been stolen). You may need to make the call from your home telephone so they can see YOUR CID.
If there has been improper use of your card, they are going to cancel the card and mail you a new one at your request.
They will NEVER, EVER call you from an automatic system and have a voice like R2D2 ask you to enter your sixteen digit account number.
These calls are ALWAYS SCAMS -- attempts to obtain information which can be used to bilk someone of money! You become that someone as soon as you enter your card number!
I received a phone call from this number, 734-513-7707, at 9:30 this Sunday evening. They stated it was an important phone call from my bank and proceded to state the correct name of our bank. The recording told me our card had been suspended and to press "1" to speak to the security department. They again repeated our bank's name. I pressed "1" and it asked for the card number. I started to enter it and then it hit me that it was a scam. I never finished putting the number in and immediately hung up.
I reported yesterday that we had gotten a call from this number. Well, over 100 people in my town in CT got the calls over the weekend. The local bank whose name was given in the phone call has been alerted. Several local news stations are reporting on it and the local police department is now involved. They said it is a very "high tech" scheme where the scammers are hacking into legitimate business lines all over the country and then use the business phone numbers to make their fake calls-the businesses are not involved in the scam. If you try to look up the phone number, more than likely it will come back as a legitmate business but the hackers are using it for their scam and you will not find out who is really making the calls.
Call received Apr. 1, 2009 on my husband's cell phone number (we're in PA). Once in a while, I'm glad he's such a procrastinator and aksed my opinion. Since this account was closed, I checked the phone number in dogpile.com and found this page.
