Linda~ I've had the same problem, the account from over 10 years ago was sold the Portfolio Recovery, and now they call me from 10 different numbers...even on Super Bowl Sunday!
Received call today, Sunday 2/6/11 at 4:57 PM. I have downloaded my whole list of these numbers and it is quite extensive. The first time I was called, AND it was a Sunday on my cell phone. I didn't know who it was. I lost everything during 2004 - 2006 and was living in temporary housing. Once I started working again, it wasn't full time but it was half time and would keep my head above water. I had already talked to the account holder, Target Corp. and they didn't really hassle me. I explained what had happened and she said she understood and I never heard from her again or from Target. When Portfolio Recovery called me, saying that I owed Target $8000 and they wanted me to make arrangements to pay. I burst out laughing and said "hey lady" I am unemployed and my unemployment benefits ran out so good luck trying to get anything. I asked her politely on the phone to please not call me again. About 2 days later, I received another call and I said that I had already been called and that I am not working and have no income. I repeated the request telling this guy that I already told the previous caller no to call again. But he then said "we call every other day to check your status. That's when I hung up the phone and started researching numbers and reporting them. In MN, the statute of limitations is 6 years and it's getting close to 7 years. I am sending a cease and desist letter and list all the dates and phone numbers used and then tell them that that phone has been on the Do No Call List since 2005. And, if they still don't stop, my next stop is to files a report with Minnesota's Attorney General and she's a tough one and strongly supporting the "little guy/gal".
I get calls from them daily for a debt from 1987, bankrupcy was files in 1990 and this debt was paet of it. It is illegal for them to try to collect on this according to my bankrupcy papers
ALL THE CALLS THAT ARE SHOWING UP FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS ( AT LEAST 30 OF THEM) ARE ALL COMING FROM 1 PLACE...NORFOLK, VIRGINIA....HOME OF PORTFLOLIO RECOVERY. PORTFOLIO WAS RECENTLY BOUGHT OUT BY CAPITAL ONE AND NOW HAVE WHAT'S CALLED "SKIP LINES" IN ALL OR MOST OF THEIR NATIONWIDE (CAPITAL ONE) OFFICES. A "SKIP LINE" IS NOTHING MORE THAN CALL FORWARDING. A COMPUTER IN THEIR NORFOLK HOME OFFICE DIALS A SPECIFIC DESIGNATED NUMBER, AT SAY, A CAPITAL ONE OFFICE IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA....UPON RECEIPT OF THE CALL, IT IS AUTOMATICALLY FORWARDED TO YOUR NUMBER IN, FOR EXAMPLE, ATLANTA, GEORGIA. YOUR CALLER ID SHOWS IT AS OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA. THIS IS DONE TO CREATE THE IMPRESSION THAT ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT CREDITORS ARE CALLING YOU....WHEN IN FACT, IT'S JUST ONE...PORTFOLIO RECOVERY.....OUT OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
