I stupidly answered a 800 call and it was a debt collector that had an Indian accent. He insisted he could get my debt way down. Then when I said I would get back,to him on it, he became mean and said I had to give him 100.00 for the so called deal! It was a learning experience, and I will not do it again. What is really sad, is how many poor, elderly, lonley, isolated people they do scare into writing post dated checks ECT. Its sick!
Unfortunately, it's not illegal to try to collect on out-of-statute debt. However, it's also not illegal for you to laugh when they threaten you with a lawsuit to try to recover it.
Actually, it's worse. If you pay the debt, it restarts the clock for Fair Credit Reporting and Statute of Limitations purposes. If the debt is out of statute and no longer on your credit report, you're better off ignoring it completely.
Well said! I got a call from this number to this morning.I am in the middle of fixing my credit and one thing I have learned, is never!! Answer a call that you don't know! Copy, paste it on google, and then be thankful for 1-800- notes!
