my mother received the same message from "Revenue Canada" and called to answer to a "mr. adam spencer" (his assistants are "ray" and "anna"). he told my mom to send a money order of 7500 dollars through walmart or a western union (which is very sketchy) or she would be arrested. he told her not to tell anyone, and if the bank asks why you need the money to say its a family emergency. it seems that their new number is 1(343) 885 7631(which is the ottawa area code). they are very convincing and will even give you id numbers, rankings, and an office location. we went to the police and there have even been reports of these people threatening to deport immigrants (who dont know any better) if they dont pay right away. i hope this helps.
Yes the same thing happened to me. Indian accent & same phone number. He didn't ask me for money for I didn't react. He threatened that the police shall come & arrest me. I was not sure if it was a scam . I went to work very nervous and checked out the area code. Thats when I realuzed it was a scam. I had informed my janitor that the police were coming to the building to arrest me. He was like oh yeah? Revenue Canada?
They left what sounded like a digital voice mail on my 79-year old mother's phone which upset her. I called back and someone with a thick accent (middle eastern) said the office was closed and asked me to call back on Monday. I asked if it was Canada Revenue and he said yes but the office was closed and I needed to call back on Monday. I asked why Canada Revenue would not leave a toll free number and why he was answering the phone on the weekend if the office was closed.
This is an attempt by fraudsters to obtain information from you so that they may steal your identity and commit fraud. No tax department whether it be the US (IRS) or Canada (CRA) would call you and threaten to lay charges against you and threaten to put you in jail. If you were under their radar, they would have to conduct an audit and they would have to inform you in writing first. If you get such a call, do not give them any of your personal information - just hang up on them.
from eastern Canada, received the call 15 min ago, the answer service got it, then my wife checked it out. they said they were revenue Canada and all the same b.s. as everyone else got . I'm now waiting for a return call as I am off work for a bit so I could have some fun with these [***] monkeys. pretty bad that we have to screen calls because 90 percent of them are this type of crap.
They just called me 4 times over the past 2 hours saying legal action would be taken if I didn't return their call. Was thinking wth.... Pretty sure they send out letters instead of calling so was already suspicious. Didn't call them back as I looked up the number. Obviously a scam. Love how my recording said "stay safe" at the end... Oh I will!
