So you forgot about this debt, ignoring all mail sent to you regarding it, until they called you? Hallelujah! Another miracle from the Debt Amnesia-curing collectors!
It is chase. Everyone is correct. They just called me. I owed them. It's collections. Don't be all defensive when you owe money and you are trying to call them scammers. lol that's funny. I spoke to them, called the number back and also contacted my local branch to verify. Again, IT IS CHASE BANK calling you. Pay your debt.
The fact that you don't think a debt collector would ask for SSN does not automatically prove that it's not Chase, that just proves that they don't pass your standards for collections practices. Have you actually verified the number doesn't belong to Chase? I doubt it.
To automatically assume anyone claiming the number is legit is a "shill" that is "working for the scammers" is patently ridiculous and presumptuous. You have no evidence that the number DOESN'T belong to Chase, and we have decent evidence that it does - e.g. phone calls taken from the number that were actually legitimate Chase Collections calls. The best you can say is that some scammers might be spoofing a perfectly valid number from a legit company in order to make you think it's a valid call. That would explain both scenarios where people get legit collection calls from this number and other people get scam artist calls from this number. The end result is the same - don't answer any call you don't recognize. If the debt collector wants their money badly enough they'll leave a message or send letters, and you can always Google their contact information and call them back at a known legit number.
It's legit in general - meaning the number is actually assigned to the actual JP Morgan Chase Bank company and is legitimately used by their collections department for outbound calls. http://www.yellowpages.com/westerville-oh/mip/chase-284329
That said, one trick of scammers is to spoof their outbound caller ID using known and valid phone numbers, in the hopes of fooling people into thinking the call is legit.
So both those who say it's legit AND those who say it's not are technically correct.
The best best is to not pick up when they call, especially if you have no business with Chase.
Don't listen to the panicky hysterics of over-reactionary people, do some research and find the right answer.
