Got a call from same number this morning. There are two people involved - First caller said his name is John Cruz and told me I have police complaint and legal affidavit against me. Asked me to call back once his supervisor is there. Later his "so-called" supervisor called by name David Marshall and said the same thing. Asked me to settle the matter quick. Was talking about the state tax evasion. The moment I said my CPA will contact you, he said we cannot help you and hung up. I called my local police department and let the officer know about this. He said these guys must be pranksters - ignore them or tell them that you have asked the state/local police to get involved - and they should back out.
Yes ... my family received a call from a Ron Davies pretending to be a police officer and that i was in troible with the law (in new jersey). when i called the number (from work) it went to voice mail (magic jack on the recording). i eventually got him in person and told him that if he called me again i would report him to the authorities. he screamed a bunch of obscenities and then hung up.
My wife received the same from the "State Investigation Department" call regarding 3 cases against me. She told them that i will be calling them back and asked for a number to call back. They gave the same number. 732-964-0148. Indeed when i called i got the Magic Jack message and was sure about the fraud.
Then someone called me back on my phone number i was calling from. When i asked for his name he stated that he was Officer Jack Carter (with a very recognizable Indian Accent - i am indian myself). His badge number was E230994 and then when i asked him for the address of the US Gov. office (Since he was calling from a US Gov agency) he was calling from, he said he was not going to provide me with his personal details, but insisted on getting mine. Before i could insist on getting more details from him, he hung up.
Called again and got someone else. I asked to talk to a supervisor and he asked me to hold on and forgot to mute his phone and started to talk in Hindi. Then I started my discussion in Hindi and he hung up. Be aware - FRAUD written all over this. I wish someone could track this fraudsters and send them to jail for the harassment.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
Similar story-"Edward Smith"--who had a very thick Indian accent--said he was calling from State Investigations Bureau of NJ. When asked what it's in regards of, he said he couldn't reveal and when I asked for the website, he said I couldn't google it. SERIOUSLY??!! You can Google EVEVERYTHING these days! That's when I figured it was a scam-then I found this site, and found all the reports on this number alone! (Plus there was a lot of background noise coming from his end---common sense says a gov't. office shouldn't sound like a call service in the background.)
PLEASE be VERY aware of these random numbers that call and just report it.
