Got a call from same number this morning. There are two people involved - First caller said his name is John Cruz and told me I have police complaint and legal affidavit against me. Asked me to call back once his supervisor is there. Later his "so-called" supervisor called by name David Marshall and said the same thing. Asked me to settle the matter quick. Was talking about the state tax evasion. The moment I said my CPA will contact you, he said we cannot help you and hung up. I called my local police department and let the officer know about this. He said these guys must be pranksters - ignore them or tell them that you have asked the state/local police to get involved - and they should back out.
This is a magic jack customer. I am thinking of starting a class action lawsuit against magic jack for allowing such customers. Let me know if any of you want to join.
Also we need to have a call type below for fraud.
Thx
I received call for this number today early morning - I did not understand his name - he spoke very fast and mixed British+Indian accent. He told me that 3 cases against me and had already sent 3 letters etc... 17 moths jail and citizenship cancelled are being consequences...When I asked my options, asked me to pay $1700 - he hung up when I told him that I will talk to my lawyer. Someone else again called back within few minutes leaving message to call back -- I haven't called back, but if I get this call again, I plan to have some fun with these thieves ....
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
I got the similar call and series of conversations.
They want me to pay $2,267.50 right now or I will be arrested! He said to get cash from convenience store and pay by "Green Dot" card.
My wife received a call from these guys as well. Similar story. Have not filed our taxes. If we don't pay immediately, we will get arrested. Pressurizing us to pay up immediately. When we refused, they hung up.
