A legitimate debt collection company would not hang up on you for requesting an address. There's no such thing as a restraining order involving a debt. It is against the law to threaten you, as this employee did. Verify that you really have an unpaid debt by contacting Bank of America AND checking your credit reports from the three credit reporting companies (in case there's erroneous info on them that needs to be corrected). Also, check the statute of limitations for debts in your state; you're already more than 7 years past the alleged unpaid debt. It's possible that your state has laws to get a debt that old expunged from your records -- and that's assuming you really did owe it in the first place. If, indeed, the claims about a 2003 debt are false, or if they're trying to coerce you into paying a debt that's past the statute of limitations for your state, it's in your best interests to file a report against Litigation Support Services with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
You are mistaken about this company threatening to take you to court. It is illegal for them to threaten to file against you unless they are actually going to do so. This company is a scam. None of the information they have given me is correct as far as their company or their attorneys. I am filing a complaint with the Virginia Bar Association as a Mr William Ward has given me two incorrect bar numbers on two different phone calls. Per the Virginia Bar both of these numbers are linked to deceased attorneys. Mr Ward flat refused to provide the attorney license number. This man is very abusive and it's very hard to believe some of the language and threats he throws at you. The address he gives doesn't exist either. I am going to take this situation as far as I can to find out who this is. Unfortunately they will probably just go away and nothing will be done. Any additional information that is not already posted here would be very much appreciated.
I work for an attorney and just dealt with this "company" for a client of ours. They called her and said all the things mentioned above. I spoke to Mr Ward regarding the bill being paid in 2006. All he kept doing was yelling and demanding our address and Bar number so he can file a harassment compliant against our law firm for calling him multiple times. That is just humorous to me on so many levels.
The "company" Litigation Support Services is not registered with the State of Virginia ( the one listed is an old company that did medical records for court proceedings) and I confirmed with the Virginia Business License and the Registered Agent for the company with the same name that it has no affiliation with the Fraudulent Company.
The BBB has attempted to contact this company and they refuse to give a real address for the "company". Also, this "Mr Ward" said the attorney for the "company" is "John Brockovich." According the the Virginia Bar, there is no such attorney licensed in the State of Virginia.
I would suggest strongly that NO PAY ANYTHING to this "company" and call the Virginia Attorney General at (804) 786-2042 and file a complaint immediately .
This is from the National Legal Systems website. LSS is saying they are affiliated with them. LSS is most definitely a scam.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
It has been brought to our attention that a company identifying themselves as National Legal Systems has been calling individuals, throughout the country, threatening lawsuits, court appearances, summons, arrests and giving 48 hours to call them (904)758-5980. We want to inform you that WE ARE NOT AFFILIATED in any way with this firm. A check with the state of Florida of the filing for National Legal Systems shows that on 11/06/1989 that company was dissolved and their status as of July 2010 is inactive.
Their method of operation seems fraudulent and we urge EXTREME CAUTION. We are NOT a collection agency and never have been. We are a Chicago based law firm licensed to practice law in Illinois and other jurisdictions and our good name is apparently being used to perpetrate a fraud. Please call us if you have further information on this organization or have any further questions at 1-800-728-5285
