Why the heck would you even think of talking to SCUM like them? no computer company would call you like that. wake up! why would you even have a conversation with them? if you wondered about the call tell them to call later when your husband is home. but what you should have done, using your (brain?) was to hang up. obviously you have not been on this earth that long to realize this crap goes on 24/7 wake up and smell the roses. you were lucky you did nothing.
Vague ID. Claimed they're technicians. After I said I'm the computer owner, the caller patched me on to a "senior" tech. Both with heavy S. Asian-Indian accents. Said my computer giving off error reports & may already have virus infection from the Internet; so, they must analyze the reports to see why. First instruction: "On the lower left hand corner, the c-t-r-l, next to the 4 flags (MY Q: You mean the MS logo?) A: "Yes. Press ctrl and R together." (I follow, no comp reaction, I realize they want control of my keyboard!). So, I ask.. MY Q: How do I know you"re legit? A: Madam, etc. (Vague answer, but they NEVER say they are Microsoft technicians). "Tech" said I only have to use the keyboard, everything will be automatic but controlled by me. I SAID IF THEY WILL BE NEEDING PASSWORDS, I WON'T KNOW THOSE - MY HUSBAND AND SON DO. (A: Is your husband or son there?) I said no. At some point in the now 10 min. conversation, Tech said, "IF OUR TECHNICIANS SEE THAT YOU NEED AN APPLICATION, THERE WILL BE A ONE-TIME FEE FOR REGISTRATION." Then asked me: "CAN YOU AUTHORIZE THE REG. FEE?" I said, "No." Instantly, the line went dead, the "tech" had vanished!
They're hackers. Should they happen to call again, don't give them ANY passwords or other personal information. Tell them you know they're running a scam and hang up. If they get into your computer via remote access, they'll install nasty malware that could bad things including (but not limited to):
1) Locking all of your files and then demanding a "ransom" payment to unlock them (this is called ransomware).
2) Helping themselves to any sensitive info stored on your hard drive, like banking logins, credit card numbers, etc.
Do NOT purchase any "service" they offer you. The only ones they're "servicing" are themselves. This is a big racket originating overseas (mostly in India). If they happen to call again, inform them that you know they're running a scam and hang up. They may throw a few choice expletives at you (especially if you're female), but that's usually what they do when they don't get their way. They're real "professionals".
