Most of the folks that work at the Park Avenue Thrift store in Memphis do not appear to speak much english. Perhaps that is why no one answers the phone when called?
"You know, I don't even care what issues NAMI Memphis has. They gave me a job when no one else did. I owe my loyalty to them and I am big on loyalty. Things change, I a sure that NAMI Memphis will rise up like the P bird and things will be better for people that use ther services."
Not sure if the working conditions at Park Ave Thrift have much to do with NAMI itself, but the guy who runs the thrift store (Sterling) always struck me as being a bit crooked. NAMI is a good organization, though, and it's a shame they're not a little bigger or they could handle their own donations and thrift stores. As it is they get about 1/3 of their income in the Memphis area from Park Ave Thrift, so they can't really afford to lose that. And NAMI's cause is good, helping the mentally ill. It's a tough situation.
The phone number's 100% legitimate though, just running on old equipment and a low budget, as far as I can tell.
(I'm a former NAMI employee, and not a store employee, so I'm sure I've got a little different perspective)
