Have been calling several times a day for over a month. They are trying to solicit payment history information for our customer to build their "payment history" database.
They make it seem like an urgent matter with a case number asking us to resolve this important matter for our customer. The number they leave to call back just rings with no answer. 866-658-3140
I called the 973-929-3290 number and told them what happened with the other number, that we do not give out that kind of information about our customers, and to please stop calling. They pretend not to know anything about it then transfer me back to the unanswered 866 number. I did get put through to someone's voice mail after calling the 973 number back after they put me through to the unanswered 866 number. I again asked them to stop calling, that we do not give out that information, and that we are seriously annoyed at the interruptions and wasted time and resources. They called again after that in the afternoon. Complaint filed with FTC and will never do business with D&B or its affiliates again.
Did you call the number back? It is Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. I started getting calls from this number after signing up for the DNBi Pro credit management services. It is indeed a D&B number. I've spoken to the person calling. They want to know if I'm having any difficulties using their web portal for DNBi Pro, following up on customer satisfaction.
Unless I've spoken with the person calling me previously, I always ask if I can call back. It's always a good policy. However, without calling the number back, how can you say for sure that it's "a bunch of crap?" D&B is the main business credit management company in the US. If a company inquired about your company, they will contact you, especially if your company is a public company & hasn't financially reported on time. Just like Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion for consumer credit, D&B has valuable and trusted credit information for businesses. It's a very useful service for making decisions about extending credit to customers.
It's really a big shame that so many of these scams are going around & so many horrible people are perpetuating them that we've become automatically suspicious. That sure says something about our society & the downward spiral of morality, ethics, and integrity. I'm don't automatically trust a person who calls me, as I said above. I received a call from a person that came in without caller ID a few years ago, asking for our shut down dates & budget. I didn't know this person, even though they claimed to be with our company. I asked for his number, which he gave me politely, and I called him back about 30 minutes later. He was indeed an employee of the company, and he figured out that I had practiced anti-phishing techniques & was pleased. I still think it's sad, though, that we HAVE to protect ourselves & our employers this way, but it is necessary. Just be careful not to get overly paranoid.
Claims to be Dun & Bradstreet, that's what my caller ID says & that's what the person who left the message said. Searched D&B for phone numbers, could not find that one. No way to know who really called.
