The idiot from this number is telling me my computer is sending him stuff.  I know better.  I asked him what my computer was sending him and he couldn't tell me.  I asked him to identify himself and he would not.  Dude couldn't even vary from his script a little bit.   Can you say social engineering and not very good at it!

Don't give these people the time of day.

Few wks back I actually rec'd error msg from MS when signing on to laptop - which I had not been on in many weeks (I use tablet and cell usually.)  I did not generate a report back to MS and error was correctable within the laptop - appeared to relate to word processing app conflicts and need for many updates.
About a week later my husband answers a call from man stating he was aware we were having error problems and was calling in response to our request for help.  He then explained that he would need our online acct info to start with.  My husband had forgotten I'd had a problem with my laptop that was resolved.
Like many families our communication at times is limited due to his work schedule and this very common problem leaves us vulnerable to being in the position of a spouse actually making arrangements for things and not telling us and then us having to guess what to do.  Clearly,  that works extremely well for the scammers.  I have sympathy for people getting scammed.  Just because they are naive, doesn't make it their fault that they are easy prey.  There always have been and will be those who prey on the vulnerable.  We will have to establish laws pertinent to the ever changing face of the internet,  in spite of those clamouring to have an essentially lawless domain.
My husband was savy enough to be suspicious of the caller who couldn't answer the "right" kind of questions and actually became quite rude and irritable that husband had the audacity to try to verify caller's bona fides.... another huge red flag.
Then today another cell phone call from CA (213) 910-8228 - or at least that is what caller ID shows.  This time we don't answer But these calls will continue.  I don't know much about tech stuff,  and I don't know much about law stuff,  but I know a fair anount about being really pissed off and annoyed by these people who "appear" to me to be breaking laws.  And I wonder just how many folks are engaged in this kind of activity?
It's gotten to the point I hate to shop online for a particular product.  In spite of setting my systems for highest levels of security,  and only going to 'safe sites,'  anytime I product search, it seems my email is flooded by junk/spam email that gets through filters,  and even more concerning,  within 15 minutes of starting a product search,  I start getting ads for related products.  I am SO fed up with this kind of intrusion!
Eventually we were able to obtain legislation to allow us privacy from unsolicited calls into our lives with penalties for those who disregard our rights to be free from solicitation.  Not only are these scammers "soliciting" us in our home at inappropriate times,  excessive numbers of times, and ignoring our requests to be removed from their contact lists.... BUT when they do solicit us it is for the purposes of FRAUD!!!  They aren't selling magazines or weight loss supplements,  they are flat out trying to get identity and account information in order to somehow extort money from us, plaine and simple.
Trying to deal with this state by state would be a nightmare and since so many of these incidents cross state lines it would seem to me that should make it a Federal jurisdiction, perhaps.  At the Federal level presumably more resources would be available.  So,  I have questions.  Does anyone know if this issue is being addressed via legislation or law enforcement anywhere?  If we wanted to try to force attention to this issue,  what Federal entity would be the most appropriate...  FCC ???
For those who stayed with this to the end,  I would welcome your thoughts on how to approach this on a large scale.
