Call from Cleveland, OH; suspecting telemarketer, i didn't answer. No voicemail message was left. Am grateful for clarifications on this site, confirming my suspicion.
A woman caller from this number (216-415-8031) claimed to be with Microsoft. Her accent was heavy, so she was difficult to understand. She passed me on to a man who said he was Steve Hayden. He said that they were from Microsoft and could tell that my computer was vulnerable to hackers. He convinced me to enter a passcode, and I'm kicking myself for doing it. With it, he installed Supremo and took over my computer. Then the ransom threats began. I plan to report them to the FBI. Fortunately for me the computer is old and replaceable, and I back up regularly to an external hard drive.
TL;DR: HANG UP IMMEDIATELY. THEY WILL TAKEOVER AND EXHORT RANSOM.
I didn't answer a call from this number and they left no message when I didn't answer. I found 5 recent reports, 3 = unknown caller. 1 = left no message, I = scam about fixing your internet connection. I called this number from a blocked burner phone I have and the number is listed as not in service.
[***] woman that I couldn't understand. Heard long silence, then boiler room sounds in background. [***] are an annoyance lately, especially if you call American Express. Can't understand what the Hell they are saying, and they would be better off sweeping a dirt floor hut. The cacll was placed illegally since it violated the DNC laws.
