This guy is still around (maybe 2 of them). Got a call Friday 4/6/12 from (what he said) was Windows Technical Support then changed it later to Windows Technical support "partner". Same old stuff - computer infected with viruses. "could have infected all 3 computers that were turned on" etc., gave 2 phone numbers if I needed to call back: 1-408-786-5612 and Toll free @855-730-3380. When I called back, no answer, but did have a returned call from the ...5612 to see if I had called with trouble on my computer.
My son frowned on my gullibility (yes, I did know better, was taken off guard) and suggested I "wipe" my computer. I chose to do a Recovery to an earlier date - hope I don't regret it.
I just got a call and seems that I have the girl and the guy had accents, probably India. The remote into my system and told me my system required some updates. I asked was there a charge and was told yes. I told them that I was not interested in making a purchase from them. The phone number that he gave me was 408-786-5612. He says that they are in Florida but the 408 is actually in Califorinia. I called my tech person and was told this was a scam. No one, absolutely no one should be calling me from Windows if I did not call them. Be careful.
Got the same call from "Steve Watson." Sounded like he was in a call center. Was calling from "Windows User" that is not connected to Microsoft. I said, I don't understand: I'm the Windows User and I didn't hire you, and you're saying Microsoft didn't hire you so where are you calling from." Then he said he worked for a "service" company that Microsoft hired so he didn't work directly for Microsoft. That they get error reports from my IP address, that patches had been sent but they weren't working, he didn't know why; that's why I was getting this call. I asked how he got my phone number; he said it came with the IP address along with my name, address, etc., through the internet. When I acted agreeable he asked me if I was knowledgeable about computers and could get into my applications. I said yes, but this was not a convenient time for me and could I have a phone number. This is the one I got.
Oh, yes ... Microsoft, which charges, what, $39.95 for a help phone call, is going to call me for free because they want to help. Un hunh. My fairy godmother also just stopped by with some really really big checks from my bestselling book.
phone call: "we're from windows support" ...blah... blah... go to this <such...such...> website and click here - it was clearly a program to give admin access to my computer. I've asked a callback number and the guy gave me this one. I never tried to call...
In the past 5 days I have received a call from Henry at least twice a day. I keep telling him he is a scam-er and I am not falling for his crap.
Got nasty with him a couple hours ago so if he calls again I will make sure he gets a reply in his ear. If you have a nasty person calling all the time just use a whistle and blow it hard. Bet he wont do it again.
