I am sure Evoice is a legitimate business who follows all laws and guidelines to keep the public safe. They even have an advertisement within this thread of complaints. See "angrysenior" 27 Nov 2012.
However, there are OTHER COMPANIES or JUST ONE PERSON that make local telephone numbers available to ANYONE for profit without checking their credentials. These less-known
companies/person(s) are likely the ones responsible for out-of-country and out-of-state callers to appear local and try to scam the person they call/target. Please report any phone number who asks for personal information to the FCC immediately at 1-888-225-5322, TTY 1-888-835-5322, fax 1-866-418-0232. The quicker the complaint, the more likely they will be caught and stopped.
If all the people who wrote about this bogus phone number on this web address called the FCC to complain, the person(s) responsible probably would have already been caught and stopped. I also would urge the FCC to look for these type of complaints on the internet and do some proactive work. The FCC is certainly well funded with tax dollars.
Call the FCC. The number(s) are on the internet under "what is the number to the FCC?" There are several toll-free phone numbers and a fax number for calls that happen over the weekend The numbers are the following: . 1-888-225-5322, TTY 1-888-835-5322, fax 1-866-418-0232.
Quite frankly, the thick middle-eastern accent sounded somewhat electronic, so it would not surprise me one bit that it was someone who speaks English very well using a device to try to disguise their accent.
